Redbridge to introduce Late Night Levy

At an extraordinary meeting of the Licensing Committee on Thursday (9^th January) evening, the motion to introduce a late night levy was passed.

The levy, which is expected to be introduced on 1^st May, will apply to all premises licensed to sell alcohol between midnight and 6am.  The Committee have ruled that no exceptions to the levy would be permitted meaning that those premises only licensed to trade past midnight on New Year’s Eve, will be caught by the levy.

Council reports state that the Levy is expected to raise a fund of £80,000. Within Greater London, there is no requirement as to which part of the Metropolitan area funds may be used.  The Council report does cite Camden, Hackney, Islington and Southwark as schemes where agreements have been reached with the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime to ensure levy funds from those areas are retained for the area.

One national operator, who made written representations during the public consultation process, estimated they would potentially face a levy fee alone of £14,340.
